Brief History of the Parish
Of
Our Lady of Guadalupe
On July 7, 1929, after several attempts, began the construction of the temple dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, under the direction of RP Mariano Guerrero S.J., the mission was built as the parish clerk of St. Angelo. From the south side of this border town at the foot of the mountain, the mission began to meet the spiritual needs of the faithful of this region, mostly Mexicans. Thus was born a community around this little mission.
As the only citywide temple dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Catholic people began seeking refuge and solace at the feet of the Virgin Mary. The same geographic location at the top of the city and the attraction for the faithful was giving the mission the title of Sanctuary or "Little Tepeyac de El Paso.
In the year 1935, Franciscans came to this city from the Province of San Pedro and San Pablo de Michoacán. Religious persecution unleashed in Mexico forced the friars to migrate to these lands. They were welcomed by the first pastor of the Diocese of El Paso, Bishop Anthony J. Schuler S.J. This allowed them to settle in this city its major seminary. September 17, 1937 joins the history of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Franciscan friars of the Province of Michoacan. On this date the mission separated from the Guadalupe Mission Parish of St. Angelo and raised the mission of Guadalupe to honor the parish community under the leadership of the Franciscans. The M.R.P.FR. Gabriel M Soto, provincial minister, was responsible for receiving on behalf of the Franciscans, the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe for their spiritual and pastoral care. He was elected the first pastor R.P. Fr Raymundo Garcia O.F.M.
On August 1st, 1939, Bishop Anthony J. Schuler authorized the erection of the Franciscan convent home or community for assisting the newly erected, parish. Rome confirms that erection on 29 August 1939.
The last transformation of the temple took place on 22 October 1979, when it was expanded, because the temple was too small for the number of faithful who come to it. These works were authorized by the Hon. Mr. D. Patrick Flores, third Bishop of El Paso.
For 57 years the Franciscans of the Province of San Pedro and San Pablo of Michoacán have been the pastoral care of the faithful who flock to this temple.
Pastors in the 72-year history spiritually guided the parish community of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
